I use BIGPIC4 and EasyPIC5 with proton with no problem, i have added PICFlash programmer to the command line in the ProtonIDE, they are the cheapest developement board in the market and the best.

Crownhill (proton) does sell boards but they are more expensive and not nearly as good deal as MikroE's boards check for yourself
http://www.crownhill.co.uk/level3.php?cat=102&sec=1
and compare to MikroE's which is also a USB programmer
http://www.mikroe.com/en/tools/easypic5/
I know which one I would buy Grin

I am using Easypic 4 and lv 24/33 from mikroe, they are good
but now, I think http://www.matrixmultimedia.com/ products
are also very good and very practical E-blocks might be
good idea.

I think no one can beat MikroElectronika Dev Board, now i have requested the universal dev board, it contains a lot of onboard interfaces and it can be equipped with any Microcontroller for only 139$

ahmed uni-ds3 are sold in egypt easily.
they are expensive and soldered you can't change the mcu.
the board alone without the cards are expensive. they have good
c compiler for pic, what about arm and psoc.
I have some arm and psoc to play with, they are very promising.
******************
$139.00 USD UNI-DS3 motherboard
Please select MCU cards:
$49.00 USD 40 pin PIC card option
$49.00 USD 80 pin PIC card option
$49.00 USD 64 pin AVR card option
$49.00 USD 48 pin PSoC card option
$49.00 USD 40 pin 8051 card option
$49.00 USD 64 pin ARM card option
$49.00 USD 80 pin dsPIC card option

139$ + shipping for an empty board + additional 49$
for any cards.

i.e to make work:
139 + 49 = 188 $ + shipping > 200$
you are a rich man;
spartan 3E is only 150$ from xilinx and build your
mcu
**************************
For the reader who would like to start:

May be The cheapest ant the best way is Do It yourself

buy pics and programmer and build whatever
you like a simple board or a dream board

in Egypt, 1$ = 5.6 EP (Egyptian Pounds)

Serial Programmers for old pic 16f84a and 16f87x = 40 EP ~ 7$
Good USB programmer = 150 EP ~ 27$
ICD Clone (the best) = 350 EP = 63 $

16f628 ~ 10 EP ~ 2$

I have some 18f4550
my dream pic, put on it bootloader
and usb socket some caps and crystall and
go on your on. Learn whatever you dream about.
18f4550 is very powerful and big 40 pins lot of ports
usb usart ccp eccp adc timer all what you dream about.
I used it for interfacing,  it is amazing.

Build by yourself LED- Buttons - 7-segment - LCD - DAC - OPAMP -
or even some DTMF ics and ir remoting.
it would be cheap. the cheapest,

Then look for local stuff

three 7-seg+ 8 LEDs + 7 Buttons + Buzzers + Relay + LDR Borad = 160EP ~ 28.5 $

Easy PIC in egypt ~ 900EP ~ 161$ Too much.

bbarney: I didn't know that matrix stuff are so expensive, thanks.

you think that $161 for the easypic is too much and you think the matrix stuff isn't so expensive when the matrix board will cost $270 and is only a fraction as good  Huh Huh I don't understand how you fiqured  that one out? matrix prices are british pounds 1.00 GBP = 2.03092 USD

For a noobie, the EasyPic board has been excellent, the built in programmer is great and as you progress there are USB abd serial ports that cab be brought into use.

And nowhere near the features the easypic has -- twice the price and only 1/2 as good!

I truly have to agree.

Hands down, http://www.mikroe.com/en/   are the best bang for the $ buck.
I have 3 of the mE Boards, and a box full of add-on boards for quick prototyping. I would have had to shell out at least 4X the total number of dollars to any other dev board manufacturer, in order to equal the total number of options I have with my mE boards.

Price A+, Quality A+, Support A+ (these guys at mE will bend over backwards to help you out).. You just can't go wrong with the decision in purchasing thier boards.

The EasyPIC from MikroE id by FAR the best, ready to go solution.

However if you want a really good dev board really cheap and dont mind the loss of all the switches and leds (but can be added in its huge proto area) try this from Sure electronics

http://cgi.ebay.com/9-Db-Side-prototype-MCU-Develop-Board-PCB-Connectors_W0QQitemZ230248279398QQihZ013QQcategoryZ36327QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

Get their PicKit2 programmer also and a zif socket you have a complete solution, minus a bit of soldering for under $50.

The cool thing about this board is its entirely customizeable for anything you need.

Its excellent for lots of things, I have several and its the best development/proto board I have ever bought.

Check out their ebay store and their regular site store. They have cheap alpha and graphic LCDs too.

I don't agree.
I have some dev boards, some DIY, some simple boards and cheap but...with few chips support.
Now they are not used by me after I bought mikroE dev board, great boards with nice price (if you look the features) and support lots of chips.
No dev board better than mikroE board.
Don't waste your money with "looks like cheap" dev boards with a few feature and chips support.
